Did the key get stuck?

It could be the case that your key got stuck in the lock, and you can thus not get it out of the lock. But it can also be the case that you can get it in and out of the lock, but can’t lock the door. In both cases, this is often due to dirt inside the lock. It’s important to be careful, because you can break the key if you pull or push too hard, which is obviously even worse.

So what should you do? Are you able to get the key in and out of the lock, but not to lock the door? Then try to put some lubricating oil inside the lock. These will make the lock smoother and can thus solve your problem immediately. Did your key get stuck inside the lock? Then try to get it out carefully. You can just use your hands, but you can also use pliers. However, watch out to not pull too hard, because that would break it. If this doesn’t work, you can try to get it out by putting the spare key in the lock from the other side, and thus push it out.

Did your key break inside the lock?

If your key broke inside the lock, it will be harder to get it out. However, there are some things you can try. If it still sticks out of the lock, you can try to get it out with pliers. Did only a small part of it got stuck inside the lock? Try to get it out with tweezers. If this doesn’t work, you can try to spray some lubricating oil inside the lock in order to move the key. Yet if this also doesn’t work, you can try to hit the door a couple of times in order to get the key moving. Just remember to be careful in order to avoid worse problems.
