Life After Uni

Mon 2nd Jul 2007 @ 11:46pm

I'm officially no longer a student now!

I've been pretty busy in the last few weeks. I've not blogged much, but here's a quick summary of what I've been up to since finishing exams:

  • The day of my last exam I got very drunk and spent the next day in bed!
  • Went home for a few days
  • Skool Dayz & Top Banana at the union
  • Tom's BBQ in Leam
  • Natasha's Birthday weekend in London (also went to see Sarah)
  • Packed up everything I own
  • Cleaned most of the house
  • Moved home on Thurs
  • Unpacked a lot of the things again
  • Went to Sidcup with mum to collect Sarah on Sat
  • Collected the keys to my new flat in Bracknell also on Sat
  • Spent Sun and today painting my flat

(Photos to follow eventually!)

I also have a lot of things to do in the next few weeks:

  • Rewriting some software for work
  • Going to Silverstone for the Grand Prix Thu-Mon!
  • More painting
  • Creating a web site with Jason Parker
  • Developing PHP Mate
  • Updating my main web site
  • Graduation
  • Holiday in Scotland with 23 members of my family!
  • Starting work at the end of the month

So busy, busy!

But I wanted to take the time to say I'll miss all the great people I've met during my time at uni:

Housemates: Ricky, Rob, John, James & Nick

Former housemates: Lucy & Athena

Fellow Computer Scientists: Steve, Raeeka, Tim, Tom, Tamsin, Nick, Lamby, Will, James

Former Computer Scientists: Natasha, Bharv

Misc: Dan, Nicola, Georgia, Aaron

And anyone else who I've forgotten about!

Provisional Exam Timetable

Sun 25th Mar 2007 @ 10:29pm

For anyone that didn't know it's been published (I didn't until just now):
Provisional summer exam timetable

(Hint: Sort by exam code, delete everything except your own, then sort by date)

Looks like I'll be finished on the 5th of June, and all of CS year 3 will be by the 7th, unless it changes (which is entirely possible of course).

Wireless in DCS

Tue 6th Mar 2007 @ 2:06pm

DCS finally has wireless, after many years of waiting! The instructions (for Win XP) are about 20 screens long - you have to download and install client and root certificates, etc. etc. - but it's actually pretty simple to do if you ignore the instructions! Just double-click both certificate files, accept the defaults settings (Next, Next, Finish, etc...), then choose the wireless network and confirm when it asks whether to use the DCS root certificate.

For some reason you still have to log into the DHCP server after that, even though you're using your own personal WPA certificate anyway. But here's the easy (scripted) way to do that (all one line):

wget -O- -q --no-check-certificate https://csuxxx:mypass@secure.dcs.warwick.ac.uk/connect/go.html

Fluxbox

Fri 2nd Feb 2007 @ 1:44pm

Continuing my theme of installing extra software in my home directory on the DCS computers, today it's Fluxbox. (I was fed up of how slowly Gnome loads these days!)

Installing Subversion (svn) In Your Home Directory

Tue 16th Jan 2007 @ 11:32pm

I decided to install my own copy of the Subversion 1.4.2 client on Joshua (university server), since they still have version 1.1.3. I don't really know what the difference is (and it does work fine with the 1.4.2 server), but I figured I might as well...

Here's how, for anyone who wants to do the same:

Does anyone else think the new DCS web site looks more than a bit rubbish?
